Here's my infected arm. The story: I left Australia with a bug bite from an unknown source on my elbow, not thinking much of it although it wasn't going away. Well, it got redder and redder as I travelled around NZ, started swelling, became very uncomfortable and eventually I started losing the full range of motion. In the photo you can see the amount of swelling. I finally went to see a doctor after my hike around the Tongariro NP, where the doctor informed me that if I let it go any worse I could have spent a few days in the hospital. They gave me an IV drip of antibiotics and some pills to take, and after leaving the doctor I embarked on a solo 2 day canoeing trip. Probably not the smartest thing to do, but how many times do I get to go to NZ?
