Toledo Gallery

Before leaving Madrid, Jules and I decided to take a day trip down to Toledo and check out what the town had to offer. Word is that Toledo was the capital of Spain way back in the day, but one of the kings decided that it didn't have enough space to expand in so he moved the capital to Madrid, and the rest is history. For me it was a very emotional trip to see the city that my birthtown was named after. Unfortunately the castles and cathedrals of this city could not compare to the industrial beauty of Toledo, OH. Note the sarcasm. Toledo, Spain was beautiful, and it was a nice sunny day, so we walked around everywhere, and the result was lots of touristy photographs that you see below.

Here is the main entrance to the city walls surrounding the city. I'd be pretty worried if I was invading the city several hundred years ago and had to get through this. Fortunately things have changed and they let us in without trying to pour boiling oil on us.

Here's a closeup of the coat of arms above the main door, which can be seen in the previous picture.

Here's a shot of the city walls, and part of the city that is not behind the city walls. I imagine that rent is a bit more expensive inside the city walls, due to the extra security against invaders of the middle ages. And if you're outside the walls I bet their pillaging insurance is quite a bit higher.

Once we entered the first wall, there was yet another humungous door to get through. Tight security to say the least. I love the small doors within big doors, when walking up to them I picture a porter opening it up late at night and grunting "what do you want???", a la Macbeth or something.

Bringing back an old tradition of mine, I decided to do a handstand underneath one of the arches within town. Props to Jules for taking the picture at the right time.

Speaking of Jules, here she is, looking bright and chipper while crossing a bridge that leads into town from the south.

Here's a picture of the cathedral, I can't remember much about it.

The top of one of the royal palaces, at least I think that's what it was.

Correction: This is actually the Church of San Juan de los Reyes, where Ferdinand and Isabella were meant to be buried until they decided the cathedral in Granada was a better place. Thanks to Terry Mount of UNCW for filling me in.

Myself posing on one of the inumerable narrow streets within the city. They're fun to walk around, you never know what's going to be around the next corner.

One of the bridges leading to the city walls. I liked the reflection in this picture.

Our lunch spot, across the river overlooking the south side of the city. A great location for lunch, away from the hustle and bustle.

A newlywed couple came down to take wedding pictures at our lunch spot, so I took a picture of them. A great day for a wedding.
